During the period 1983-1998, he held a number of managerial posts at Astra AB. Jan worked as a teacher at the Dentistry College in Huddinge during the period 1981-1983. Degree from the School of Dentistry, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, acquired in 1980.

Prior to this he was a developer at Electrolux between 1985 and 1988 and at RIFA AB between 1981 and 1985. While studying he ran his own company from 1977 to 1981. Studied engineering at KTH in Stockholm, 1980.
